About David D. Perlmutter

Professional administrator, writer and communicator.

David D. Perlmutter is Dean of the College of Media and Communication at Texas Tech University. He is the former Director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and a Professor at The University of Iowa.

He received his BA (’85) and MA (’91) from the University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. (’96) from the University of Minnesota. He served as a Board member of the American Association of Political Consultants and now sits on the National Law Enforcement Museum Advisory Committee for its Media Exhibit. He has been principal or co-principal investigator in multidisciplinary grants and internal funding proposals totaling about $800,000 and raised about $2,000,000 in new, legacy and as much in reaffirmed donations for his school. He is a graduate of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication Leadership Workshop.

In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Perlmutter is the author or editor of nine books on political communication and persuasion. He has written several dozen research articles for academic journals as well as more than 250 essays for U.S. and international newspapers and magazines. Perlmutter has also been interviewed by most major news networks, from the New York Times to CNN, ABC, and The Daily Show.

Administration

When Perlmutter became Dean at CoMC in summer 2013, enrollment was flat or dipping. He instituted a complete rebranding of the college and its majors and created a new marketing team and mission with new leadership. Overall CoMC is consistently one of the fastest growing colleges at TTU.

Increased TTU CoMC undergraduate enrollment to 1,570 (projected) in fall 2017, a 17.5% increase from 1,337 in fall 2016 and a 16.3% increase from 1,351 in fall 2013. Overall, fastest growing at TTU. Read more…

Perlmutter is the author or editor of ten books on political communication, new media technologies, and higher education published by, among others, Palgrave, Oxford, and Harvard University Press.

He has written several dozen research articles for academic journals as well as more than 400 essays for U.S. and international newspapers and magazines such as Campaigns & Elections, Christian Science Monitor, Editor & Publisher, Los Angeles Times, Philadelphia Inquirer,and USA Today.

Perlmutter has been interviewed by most major news networks and newspapers, from the New York Times to CNN, ABC, and “The Daily Show.” He regularly speaks at industry, academic, and government meetings and runs workshops on personal and institutional branding via social media, visual persuasion, and higher education issues.

As part of his role as dean he regularly engages business, government, and non-profit groups and individuals. In 2017, he was elected Vice President of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Teaching

Perlmutter is a professor in and dean of the College of Media & Communication (CoMC) at Texas Tech University. He received his BA (‘85) and MA (‘91) from the University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. (‘96) from the University of Minnesota.

The son of two professors and born into a long line of teachers on one side of the family and military officers on the other, he has spent twenty-five years as a scholar, teacher, and administrator in higher education in Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Louisiana, Kansas, Iowa (as director of a school), and now Texas.
